Calender 2026-Unveiling ‘Shape of Water’
I don’t remember when I started to photograph though
I don’t remember when I started to photograph. If I have to pin point a time I would say around the time I had my first iphone. They were mainly random clicks of my growing garden to keep a track of my plants. It slowly got extended to capturing my surrounding, the sky, the sunsets, moon rises the occasional birds that flew over my terrace. I was not even adept at editing my photos.
I ventured into the world of art, which was my long standing wish followed by writing but photography never featured as a primary focus, even as a creative hobby.
Also following a health challenge and being homebound, I never envisaged photography as an option. I always thought it meant visiting far away places with a heavy DSLR hanging from your back and clicking new, unseen places.
For a good period of time between 2022-23, I was unable to write or paint, given some changes that were taking place in my personal life. Acquainted with an iphone, by then learning to handle the camera better, I started taking random outdoor photos, capturing the street, life, night and days as I saw them.
It slowly turned into a habit where I would sniff a frame and save it through my lens and started sharing them in my social media pages. They garnered some surprising response which encouraged me to delve deep into this subject, where I tried to pick up the tricks and styles of photographs I personally enjoyed. My fondness for abstract spilled over my photographic escapades too. ICM became my favourite technique to use while photographing my favourite subject-street lamps at night.
In no time my photo album bulged with astounding 15000+ images and it was time to select and discard.
I knew what to do but did not know how to do it. One morning early last year an article came my way where the columnist, wrote about creating a series with photos which can come very handy in creating future projects.
That is when my marathon journey with my photographs begun. Following through some 15000+ photographs and some good few months of going back and forth, I could zero in on about 100 photos which I thought was worthy of sharing with some meaning.
That is where the idea of creating Calender 2026 Shape of Water took birth. I realised I have captured water bodies in several forms and structure from everywhere I went and wanted to create a series on the same.
Abstraction been my soul topic I decided to work on the water photos to bring out the essence through its structure, architecture and what it means to human life.
Toyam or Apah in sanskrit, water is considered a fundamental of the five world elements (Panchamahabhutas), and is associated with creation, purification, and the life-sustaining force, where it lends 55-60% of itself in composing a human body.
Through this work my attempt is to highlight the beauty and magic water holds in its shimmery gold, resplendent silver or quiet shadows, creating a melodious symphony coursing through earth’s veins, a never-ending sap giving life to living.
In this world where water wastage and scarcity is spoken in the same breath, this project is an attempt to remember the gift of water, its music and shamana.
Mocra has been my dream since the time I thought of anything creative. Through it I have kept my work out in this world and amazing collaborations have come my way. And this project happens to be the first solo project coming out of Mocra’s coffer. This makes me happy and excited to present this to the world “Calender 2026-Shape of water”
